I owe Lloyd Pever my chance to play Babe Ruth League baseball. I wasn't picked up by any team after preseason tryouts, but when Lloyd's team came up a player short he and Eugene D'Angelo talked their coach into choosing me. Next they had to figure out if I could play and where, so they tried me at second base...a position where I couldn't hurt them very much. Well Lloyd played right field and he had a very good arm. With a man on first the batter hit a line drive to right, Lloyd fielded it on one hop and fired it to second. The throw was a little low, so I planted one foot on the bag and stretched for the ball. Result - runner from first was forced out and the coach had found his new first baseman. Thanks Lloyd.
